Clinic Experience

Our outpatient clinical experience takes place at the Hector P Garcia Family Medicine Clinic conveniently located at our hospital, CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital – Corpus Christi Memorial.

At orientation, we meet our assigned nurses with whom we will work for the next three years.  Our clinic frequency and patient census varies according to our rotation and year in residency.  Interns participate in 1-2 half days of clinic per week.  They start with four continuity patients and gradually increase to 6 patients per clinic.  Interns have plenty of time to meet their new patients and thoroughly review the charts, examine patients and discuss medical concepts with faculty.  Second years residents participate in 2-4 half days of clinic per week and see 10-12 patients per clinic.  Third year residents participate in 3-5 half days of clinic per week and easily see 24-28 patients per day.

You will learn many procedures in our continuity clinic.  We commonly perform the following office procedures: skin tag removal, skin biopsies, abscess I&D, toe nail removal, circumcision, cervical colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, cyrotherapy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.  Our continuity clinic prepares us well for the full-spectrum of family medicine.

We recently purchased an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system for our clinic.  We are in the process of merging our clinic charts with the hospital system.
